The Drakensberg Mountains
Spectacular hiking in the mountains of KwaZulu Natal
OverviewThe Drakensberg Mountains are amongst the most magnificent in the world, rising to over 3300m. This is a walker’s paradise in the spectacular ’Mountains of the Dragon’ or as the Zulu people know them ’The Barrier of Spears’!
This holiday is based in two very different centres - Cathedral Peak set in the Ukhahlamba Drakensberg Park and the family run Cavern Drakensberg Resort set on the edge of the Royal Natal National Park.
Cathedral Peak nestles into the hillside and is probably one of the best hotels we feature. Walks can start directly from the hotel and head out onto the surrounding peaks and hills to the Doreen Falls, Neptune Pools and Rainbow Gorge to name but a few! It really is a small ’oasis’ set in absolutely the most stunning scenery.
Moving on to our second centre, the Cavern Drakensberg Resort we have marvellous opportunities for walking among the fantastic flora and fauna, indigenous forests and beautiful scenery. For those who have an interest in wildlife there is the opportunity to see baboons roaming over the hills close to the Cavern and there are over 200 species of birds. Our walks here are again superb and have wonderful names such as ’Camel’s Hump via Cannibal Cavern’ and ’The Silent Woman via Jackal Ridge’!
After an energetic but wonderful two weeks here in the Drakensberg we travel by road back to Johannesburg for our return flight.
On a couple of the days the walks may be nearer a ’C’ grade. However, there are alternative options of walks for those who do not wish to participate at this level.
