Tavira, Pearl of the Algarve

Great walking holidays in Portugal with relaxing accommodation.
Overview

Tavira... a world away from the Algarve resorts; this traditional fishing town has a beautiful setting on the River Gilão .

Lying just 20 miles from the Spanish border, Tavira was a major port in the 16th century, and there is much still to remind us of those times; winding streets, picturesque houses, gabled roofs, quaint churches and the ruins of a Moorish castle high above the town.

Tavira is among the most architecturally attractive towns in the Algarve and dates back to approximately 2000 BC. When the Moors occupied the Algarve, the town of Tavira was considered to be of great importance because of its fishing industry. More recently the earthquake in 1755 destroyed many of the buildings in the Algarve but Tavira was rebuilt with fine 18th Century buildings; a Roman bridge across the River Gilão  links the two parts of the town together.

There is much to discover. Local handicrafts play an important role in everyday life. Rock-rose, eucalyptus, lavender and pine grow here in abundance giving off their fragrance all through the year. The charms of Tavira are also many, including beaches of sand that stretch for miles, fields of orange trees heavy with the scent of blossom, fig and almond trees nestling on the hills and the whitewashed walls of the houses that have preserved their traditional appearance and of course, the great open spaces.

Here's the ideal opportunity to combine relaxed rambling in tranquil Algarvian landscapes, with time to unwind in our comfortable four star hotel, a short stroll away from Tavira's town centre. With its swimming pool, spa and panoramic bar on the top floor, allowing views across Tavira, and the Atlantic Ocean in the horizon, it sets the perfect backdrop for an evening drink.

There's much to enjoy on this holiday, it's easy to see why it's so popular with our clients - a recommendation in itself!
