Swiss Mountain Adventure

A trio of Swiss alpine villages.
Overview

This holiday is a showcase for two things at which the Swiss excel - magnificent mountain walking and the best train system in the world. We use the train to get to Switzerland, and also to travel most of the way between our three alpine centres. First stop is Villars, in French speaking Switzerland to the south east of Lake Geneva. Then it’s on to Pontresina in the Engadine, where the official language is Romansch, and finally Saas Fee, east of the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa where German is spoken.

From each of these charming alpine villages there are extensive cable car systems which allow us to ascend quickly above the tree line. and these too are included in the price of the holiday. So much for Switzerland being expensive!

Each centre is different - from Villars’ (1200m) alpine lakes and high trails through meadows and along grassy ridges with views towards Mont Blanc are a feature; Pontresina at 1805m has a wild and remote feel to it and most walks are above the tree line. Saas Fee, also at 1800m is surrounded by 4000m+ peaks, and there are some excellent contouring walks.
