Strolls through Constable Country
Walks through traditional English landscapes and villages. 5 nights.
OverviewThe classic English landscapes of northern Essex were the subject of many artists - Constable amongst them. Their works redefined what we’ve now come to accept as ’landscapes’ and have influenced the very photos thousands of us take of the countryside. Based in the Roman city of Colchester, we’ll be walking away from the beaten track using parts of the Essex Way, the St Edmund Way and the Stour Valley Path, along the banks of rivers and streams and past villages, houses and mills so typical of the area. We will also be walking along the estuary marshland, rich in varied wildlife - local oysters for afternoon tea perhaps?
Starting at Nayland, we’ll follow the vale of the River Stour downstream calling in at Boxted, Langham Hall and the church, Dedham Mill and the famous Flatford Mill (with free time to explore Constable’s ’Haywain’ setting) continuing downstream to Manningtree. We’ll explore a different river vale - that of the Colne - with a walk from Earl’s Colne, taking in riverside mills to the outskirts of Colchester, with improving views of Colchester Castle.
As a refreshing change, we head out to explore the historic fishing village, coastline and nature reserves around Tollesbury and the Blackwater estuary with views out to the North Sea. There’s also a walk from Sudbury through Long Melford with its astonishing church to the improbably picturesque and medieval village of Lavenham.
