St Cuthbert's Way
Explore the northeasts spectacular wild countryside and rich heritage.
OverviewWe'll be following 55 miles of the St Cuthbert's Way over five walks, stretching from Melrose in the Scottish Borders to Lindisfarne (Holy Island).
The route was inspired by the life of St Cuthbert; a 7th century Celtic saint, and this route passes through places associated with his life, following footpaths, tracks and quiet country lanes.
We can explore the abbey at Melrose before starting up to the pass between the Eildon Hills for wonderful views over the border country.
We continue along beautiful stretches of the Rivers Tweed and Teviot, and part of Roman Dere Street. Heading into the Cheviot Hills, we have panoramic views of the Northumberland National Park.
Much of the walking is not too strenuous, however, the sections in the Eildon Hills and the Cheviots are more demanding. The Way finishes at Lindisfarne, cut off from the mainland at high tide, where we can visit the remains of the priory and castle and take in the atmosphere of this special place.
Depending on tides, we will either visit Lindisfarne as an excursion from Wooler, or complete the 'official' route with a final day walking from Fenwick to Holy Island - bringing the milage to the full 621?2 miles of the route.
