Spring walking in Crete
Walk in Crete and discover the island's beautiful spring flowers.
OverviewCrete, Greece's largest and most southerly island, is a beautiful destination in any season. Mankind left its mark early and the scattered remains of Minoan palaces, Byzantine churches and Venetian fortifications tell of the passage of whole civilisations. Geology and the elements have left a spectacular landscape of rugged hills cut with valleys and gorges. Between the dramatic mountains and the sea lie green plains scattered with countless olive groves, vineyards and citrus trees. Along the coast, steep-sided coves and sandy beaches are washed by crystal clear waters.
Discover the breathtaking gorges, rugged landscape, sandy beaches and dramatic scenery of western Crete with a week in tranquil Kastelli, set in a beautiful bay between the Gramvousa and Rodopou peninsulas, followed by a week in the more vibrant town of Chania, with its picturesque harbour front. In spring, the mountains, plains, woods and sea shores come alive with an abundance of flora and our walks will allow time to appreciate the outstanding flowers.

I started leading for Countrywide Holidays in 1970 and spent summers at their guest houses in Snowdonia, the Lake District and Scotland. I went on to act as a guide for the Austrian Alpine Club. My career and family commitments took me away from leading but when the opportunity arose I started again in the late 1990s.
