South to the Sahara
Over the mountains and through the southern oases to the edge of the Sahara
OverviewOur adventure in Morocco starts in Marrakech where the minaret of the Koutoubia Mosque set against the snowy peaks of the High Atlas is one of the great images for the traveller. The souks by day and the Djemaa el Fna square by night create an unforgettable start to our trip.
Heading south we cross the High Atlas and descend into the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs to the oasis market town of Tinerhir, sandwiched between the High Atlas and the Jebel Saghro massif. We’ll follow nomad tracks through the dramatic scenery and village life of the Dadès and Todra gorges and meander through the shady palmeries.
We then head east to Merzouga to visit the amazing Erg Chebbi dunes before continuing south through the Drâa Valley to the Saharan town of Zagora with its backdrop of sugar-loaf mountains providing stunning sunsets and breathtaking views.
We return to Marrakech, spending a night in the provincial tranquillity of Ouarzazate on the way.
