Rustic Oakham

Strolling from a little piece of old England.
Overview

Picturesque Oakham in Rutland; the ancient capital of England's smallest county is a rustic gem and a great base for a short break of gentle walking, natural interest and a bit of history. Surrounded by beautiful undulating grassy lands and on the edge of Rutland Water, England's largest reservoir, there are gentle lakeside walks and sections of long distance footpaths passing through Oakham.

We can also visit nearby sites of interest such as the handsome Georgian town of Stamford, the spectacular Burghley House, nearby or the restored working windmill at Whissendine. Walks will be at a pace to please photographers and birdwatchers; the area is home to the first English Osprey to hatch for 150 years.

I started leading for Countrywide Holidays in 1970 and spent summers at their guest houses in Snowdonia, the Lake District and Scotland.  I went on to act as a guide for the Austrian Alpine Club.  My career and family commitments took me away from leading but when the opportunity arose I started again in the late 1990s.
