Rhine Castles & Vineyards
A week amongst waterside castles and vineyards
OverviewThe loveliest stretch of the Rhine lies between Mainz and Koblenz; the remains of over 50 medieval castles line the banks of the river which runs through a 50 mile gorge. We walk in the footsteps of medieval minstrels and English Romantic poets; climb between river and hill-top castles. The charm of the Rhine lies in the chain of picture-postcard villages, the area has been awarded UNESCO World Heritage status for its historical and geological interest.
Julia Bradbury walked some highlighted sections of this area in a recent programme for the BBC. This exposed the true beauty and spectacular walking to be enjoyed in this area of the Rhine.
In Boppard our hotel overlooks the left bank of the river. We walk on both banks of the Rhine, following parts of the Rhine Castles Way and the Rhine Path. The scenery is surprisingly varied, including woods and meadows, providing wonderful views of river, villages and castles.
We spend the second part of the week in the lively town of Rüdesheim, famous for its brandy and Riesling wines. We now walk through areas of vineyards, visiting churches and maybe a hillside monastery on the way.
