Portuguese Wanderings

Exploring undiscovered Portugal by train.
Overview

Of all the countries in Western Europe, Portugal is perhaps the least well known, its language the least recognisable and its many delights unexplored by the British. Here is an opportunity to put matters right travelling at a leisurely pace on local trains between the first and second cities of this delightful country.

We arrive and overnight in Oporto, the capital of the north, before taking the local trains via Espinho, Sernada do Vouga on to Aviero and then Coimbra, subject to train schedules, with some walking on the way.

We stay three nights in Coimbra and enjoy the sights of this most pleasant of cities; we can also walk in the Serra da Lousa, again using trains to get to the hills.

Continuing south we travel to Caldas da Rainha, ’Queens Spa’, renowned for its healing waters and just a short distance from the Atlantic Coast where we can walk while watching the Atlantic rollers coming in.

Finally we spend our last couple of days in Lisbon, which has so much to offer; we are sure to be very busy.

We stay in comfortable hotels throughout and make use of various trains ranging from the comfortable to the rickety but characterful.

Due to our client feedback and popular demand, we have decided to extend our Portuguese Wanderings holiday in 2013 by one night, providing one extra night in Oporto. This will allow an extra full day to explore Portugal's second largest city, full of history, with the Douro River and Oporto's Old Ribeira district (a UNESCO World Heritage site), there will be much to satisfy your sightseeing desires.
