Marina Alta

Exploring the hidden charms of the Costa Blanca.
Overview

Heard of the Marina Alta? Not many people have, but these attractively rugged mountains just inland from Spain’s Mediterranean coast are increasingly drawing the attention of keen, discerning walkers - in fact two of our tour leaders have independently taken holidays there and both said we had to go!

Overlooking the Med, the serrated limestone ridges of the Marina Alta are separated by steep-sided valleys, or ’barrancos’. This intricate landscape is threaded by ages-old, stepped Mozarabic trails, now ideal walking routes through the mountains, but originally pack-horse trails created when Spain was under Moorish rule. These trails link unspoilt mountain villages and ruinous hill-top castles, far from life on the Costas.

We stay just outside the village of Benimaurell, 550m above sea level, a quiet village in the heart of the mountains. On a free day a trip to Valencia may be possible.
