Lisbon & the Alentejo

Cities, plains and mountains - little known Portugal.
Overview

This holiday combines an ideal mix of walking and sightseeing in a temperate climate. We base ourselves in Lisbon for the first three nights and spend our first day exploring the city, including a visit to the riverside area of Belém and Jerónimos, a favourite area for the "Lisboetas" to visit and relax at the weekends. Our second day will be spent in the stunning village of Sintra, described by Lord Byron as "the most delightful village in Europe". And how could we disagree as we pass by the fairy tale villas and palatial residences that are surrounded by the forested Serra de Sintra, very delightful indeed!

Moving inland we travel to the heart of the Alentejo to the picturesque town of Évora, classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Évora justly occupies an important place in cultural tourism. It presents an intriguing mix of architecture from various eras dating back to the Romans. Its history, architecture and display of wild spring flowers are a great accompaniment to the superb walking in the area, particularly around the attractive and traditional village of Valverde (green valley).

Our final centre is in the wooded mountains of Alto Alentejo to the north east of Évora rising to make a natural frontier with Spain. Much of this area has been designated a Natural Park. Our base, Castelo de Vide, was originally a Roman settlement and the area around is full of megalithic remains. The nearby village of Marvão, surrounded by buttresses and towers is one the most spectacular sights of the Alentejo.
