Le Tour du Mont Blanc
A magnificent trek around Mont Blanc
OverviewThis perennial favourite is the classic European walking circuit and a truly exhilarating experience. Mont Blanc (4,807m) is the highest peak in Western Europe but other peaks in the massif are just as impressive and beautiful.
Our route starts and finishes near Martigny in Switzerland. We take our time on the circuit, spending one night in most places, but two nights at the Croix de la Bonhomme refuge and in the Chamonix valley at Le Tour. At first we head generally south-east, passing typical Swiss mountain villages before reaching the Col Ferret, where we enter more rugged country and descend into Italy with Les Grandes Jorasses to the west. From Val Ferret we can gaze at the Peuterey ridge which stretches from the Aiguille Noire to Mont Blanc, views which stay with us all the way to Courmayeur.
Turning north-westwards we climb to over 2,500m to view the enormous amphitheatre of Mont Blanc’s Italian side. The whitish-green peaks of the Pyramides Calcaires come into view as we pass old frontier buildings making our way to the Col des Fours (2,665m).
Magnificent panoramas unfold of the Mont Blanc Massif, the Vanoise Alps, Gran Paradiso and the Matterhorn range. Our route descends into France and the spectacular Chamonix valley, before crossing back into Switzerland, having completed this classic circuit.
