Le Luberon

Walking in the heart of Provence.
Overview

The chestnut-covered hills of the Luberon were made famous by Peter Mayle 20 years ago in his book ’A Year in Provence’. There can be few areas of the world where history and scenery blend so well, from the Romans when this was part of their ’Provincia Romana’ to walks by olive groves to country markets in tiny villages.

We base ourselves in the Hotel Mas de la Tour in the open countryside to the west of Apt from where we will walk and visit the famous and the less well known. One walk will take us to Sénanque Abbey, surrounded by lavender fields. On the way we pass through the villages of ochre-red Roussillon and Gordes, made from cream coloured stone, both perched on the edge of the Vaucluse plateau. The cobbled streets on Lacoste and Bonnieux form part of another walk through deepest Provence. We also walk to the summit of Mourre Nègre, at 1125m the highest point in the Luberon. Wherever possible we will buy our lunch provisions from a local morning market, a visit to which is one of the many joys of Provence.

Other typical features of deepest Provence dot the landscape - ancient bories, like igloos made of stone, windmills, vineyards, lines of plane trees and ruined citadels. The light has attracted artists through the years. The walks are mostly around 12 miles long, sometimes following GR paths, along paths, tracks, and occasionally minor tarmac country lanes. Apart from the climb up Mourre Nègre there is relatively little ascent and descent.
