Kaçkar Adventure
Hike the Turkish Himalaya!
OverviewThe Kaçkar mountains are a continuation of the Himalaya, inland from the Black Sea in north east Turkey. They rise to nearly 4000m, and in between the summits and the sea are some of the most awe-inspiring mountain landscapes you are ever likely to see.
Our walks mostly start above the cloud forest and the tree line, taking us to summer pasture or ’yayla’ and beyond to high moorland and glacial lakes, just beneath the highest peaks. The paths we follow are not waymarked on the ground, and poorly shown (if at all) on maps, but known intimately by our local guide. They are predominantly established trails between ’yaylas’ used by the seasonally nomadic Hemsin people, with similar terrain to the trails in the English Lake District. We follow the mountain routes as far as we can by minibus, sometimes to trailheads as high as 2800m, then walk through scenery which amazes at every turn - this just isn’t how people imagine Turkey!
A real feature of the alpine areas on this holiday are the wild flowers, many indigenous to the area, especially on the Gito Highland.
