In Search of the Silk Road
An Uzbek adventure. Mountains, trade routes and yurts.
OverviewUzbekistan has some of the finest architecture that the wealth taxed from the merchants on the Silk Road could afford. Khiva, Bukhara and Samarkand are classically beautiful cities.
We fly directly to Tashkent and briefly explore the city before continuing to Khiva, the best preserved Silk Road city. Travelling south to Bukhara, we experience how life might have been for the Silk Road traders. Once in the desert we stop at Nurata to explore Alexander the Great’s castle. Before travelling to our camp at Yangikazgan on the shores of Lake Aidarkul, we stay in traditional yurts for two nights, catch fish for lunch and walk the trails leading from the camp. A unique and rewarding Uzbek experience.
Samarkand is a wonderful place; highlights include the impressive Registan Square. Returning to Tashkent, we explore the Chimgan mountains to the north east of Tashkent province.
This is essentially a sightseeing holiday on foot with one good D grade walk.
