Hiking Yorkshire's Three Peaks

Classic walking: the Great Peaks of the Yorkshire Dales.
Overview

Yorkshire's famous Three Peaks walk takes in The Dales' three highest summits, Pen-y-ghent (2,276ft/694m), Whernside (2,415ft/736m) and Ingleborough (2,372ft/723m) which rise high above the wild scenery of the western valleys. Traditionally attempted as a part of an arduous 12 hour, 25 mile, 5,000ft of ascent challenge, we'll be taking things a bit easier and tackling one mountain a day.

This is limestone country; the terrain is varied with limestone cliffs and escarpments and peaks topped with millstone grit. The views from Yorkshire's Big Three are stupendous. The distinctive Pen-y-ghent, the Hill of Winds, lies on the Pennine Way the backbone of England. Ingleborough, the second highest mountain in the Dales is a flat grass-topped plateau.

The ridge shaped Whernside, Yorkshire's highest point, on the Cumbrian border with views of the Lake District and on a clear day reaching as far as Blackpool Tower on the Lancashire coast. Trains on the Settle to Carlisle railway can be seen crossing the Ribblehead viaduct before disappearing into Blea Moor tunnel.

John has been a compulsive traveller and walks leader since high school. Having completed the Three Peaks challenge of ascending Ben Nevis, Scafell and Snowdon within 24 hours he's also clearly got an adventurous streak. These days he leads mainly in Greece and Turkey with the odd trip to other destinations which have attracted his attention.
