Hiking from Alpbach

Spectacular walking in the Austrian Tirol.
Overview

Surrounded by a diverse and beautiful chain of mountain peaks, ridges and remote side valleys, the scope of walks from the attractive village of Alpbach is almost limitless. There are walks to the upper reaches of the valley and breathtaking hikes to its higher peaks such as the craggy Gratlspitze, the dome-like Schatzberg and views of the dominating pyramidal Grosser Galtenberg which beckons from the first days of your holiday. In addition we will be able to explore the heights of the nearby Rofan plateau and the Karwendel Mountains separated by the Achensee, Tirol’s largest and arguably most beautiful lake. One of our staff rates this as his favourite walking centre anywhere in the world!

With a combination of grades to choose from, this holiday allows for more strenuous days achieving the high places with panoramic views, but also easier days allowing for pleasant rambles and lower level walks to discover the often flower-filled meadows, wide ridges, isolated lakes, hamlets, and the spectacular Kundl Gorge.

Both local and hired transport together with cable cars and chairlifts are used to further increase the scope and diversity of the walks. We are based near the upper end of the peaceful and attractive Alpbach valley, which has a very distinctive character of its own. Local laws ensure that all new buildings are built in the traditional style, so timber houses decked with spectacular window boxes and carved balconies are in abundance. The villagers organise regular festivals and colorful processions throughout the summer.

Note that a couple of the D walks will be at the top of the D grade owing to the roughness of the rocky mountain paths involved. The local waymarking is so good that simple walks around the village or use of the gondola to a high-level restaurant sun terrace, would be an alternative for anyone wanting an easier day.
