Hadrian's Wall National Trail - A Roman Frontier
Discover Roman secrets along this World Heritage Site.
OverviewThis continuous walk, with two bases, follows the Hadrian's Wall National Trail. With its relatively easy terrain and lack of steep ascents, it should appeal to just about every reasonably fit walker!
Starting just west of Heddon on the Wall, and finishing at Bowness on the Solway Firth, we'll cover about 66 miles in 6 days, following in the footsteps of the Roman soldiers who once patrolled this northernmost outpost of the Roman Empire.
Hadrian built the wall between AD120-128 to mark the boundary of the Empire, and even today this remains a remarkable monument. The middle sections, in particular, pass through some of the most spectacular scenery in Britain, little changed since the Romans left.
There'll be time to visit many well-preserved sites on our way, such as Chester's Roman Fort, Birdoswald and Carlisle Castle. Most days include an hour's sightseeing. If you're members of National Trust or English Heritage don't forget your membership cards!
