Gothenburg & the Koster Islands

Discover the good life on Sweden's west coast.
Overview

This holiday was a revelation to our clients in 2011. Excellent food, walks to deserted beaches, total peace and calm, excellent locally-sourced food and charming people. What surprised many was that this is a real walking holiday, not just ambling by the sea!

Our holiday starts on the island of South Koster, an hour’s boat ride from the mainland, where life moves at a slow pace and has a timeless quality. Like its smaller neighbour, North Koster, to which it is connected by a tiny ferry, there are no cars on the island – it’s back to nature Swedish-style. The highest point is 59m, tracks and paths meander though woods and fields to tiny coves and harbours, occasionally over small odd boulder fields and slabs of granite. Besides exploring these two islands, on one day we visit the neighbouring islands of Trossö, Kalvö and Lindö for a walk with a local nature guide. There’s always a chance of spotting seals – we are in Sweden’s first marine national park.

Gothenburg, like many Swedish cities, is surrounded by green and lush countryside, whilst being a real cultural capital. Whilst our programme of walks will take us out of the city, if you prefer you can visit its top-rated museums and galleries.

If you have a love of serendipity, tranquillity and Swedish style, then you will enjoy this holiday. Our leaders certainly do – they all want to go back!
