Glorious Georgia

A journey through ancient wonders, natural beauty, and the root of the grape.
Overview

Perched amongst the towering Caucasus Mountains in the region know as Eurasia, where east meets west, Georgia is truly a wonder to explore.

Thought to be one of the most ancient countries in the world, there are parts of Georgia where time appears to have stood still. With glorious architecture dating as far back as the 4th century, Georgia has been awarded many UNESCO World Heritage Site accolades. We visit Mtskheta; the ancient capital and religious centre of Georgia dating from 1000 years B.C. We’ll explore Javari church and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral where the robe of Christ is alleged to be buried.

Gori the birth place of one of the 20th century’s most controversial leaders - Joseph Visarionovich Jughashvili (better known to the world as Stalin), and Uplistsikhe an interesting cave town, are both on the path of the Great Silk Road.

Georgia is a land of natural beauty, blessed with stunning scenery and a rich variety of flora and fauna, flowing mineral waters, caves and waterfalls. We will explore the 6th century David Gareja cave complex located in stark, semi desert landscape. We walk though the village of Kazbegi where we can enjoy beautiful views of one of the highest summits in the Caucasus - Mt Kazbegi (5047m). Whilst walking from Gudauri we will find ourselves on a beautiful valley surrounded by fascinating flowers, ending up at a 15th - 17th century Khada fortress.

We also spend time in the capital Tbilisi, with many places of interest to explore and ancient architecture to admire. For a city so historic it has a lively Mediterranean mix to enjoy.

We will have the opportunity to observe the ancient Georgian method of wine production at a 300 year old wine cellar and of course sample some from the traditional clay jars.
