Gateway to Burgundy

A week of walking, wining and dining in Auxerre.
Overview

Travelling south and east from Paris by train you will notice the countryside becomes more and more attractive. You know when you are crossing into Burgundy as vineyards begin to appear on the hills that run down to the rivers. Auxerre is easy to recognize on arrival as the cathedral towers over the town across the Yonne river.

The town is well worth a look but a whole array of great walking awaits us. The countryside is classic rolling terrain with cliffs and bluffs above the rivers. We are in wine country here with Chablis wine predominating and the vineyards are great places to walk, particularly at autumn time.

We will use the excellent public transport system here to travel out to walk through remote fortified villages, past ancient caves and to panoramic view points across the peaceful Burgundian countryside.

Getting here couldn't be more relaxed with direct trains from Paris stopping a few minutes' walk from our hotel. A taxi will take our luggage so we can stretch our legs after the journey.
