Extremadura and Doñana - a Birdwatchers Delight
A chance to see some of the most spectacular birding sites in Western Europe.
OverviewWe have a birdwatching expert on our staff and an expert’s hand is clearly visible in the planning of this holiday. We visit two fantastic diverse birding sites, fortunately both are located amongst walking areas in western Spain. So we can combine great birding, some walking and a little Spanish and Roman culture on the way.
We start in Plasencia, Extremadura close by the Monfragüe Park. Our four nights here allow time in the park and a day in the Sierra de Gredos, two diverse habitats. Highlights for birders might include Griffon, Monk and Egyptian Vulture, Red and Black Kite, possibly five eagles - with a chance of seeing the rare Spanish Imperial Eagle.
We also take a trip out to Trujillo and the steppe to look for Great Bustard.
We also visit Montanchez before heading south to Mérida, the capital of Roman Spain.
Further south to El Rocio, gateway to the Doñana National Park on the wetlands at the mouth of the Guadalquivir River, there’s perhaps the finest bird watching venue in Europe.
The Park is the home of the endangered Iberian Lynx, along with Mongoose, Genet, Wild Boar, Red and Fallow Deer. Birdlife includes Greater Flamingo, Glossy Ibis, Cattle Egret, Spoonbill, herons, ducks and waders and rarer species for which the Park is famous; Purple Swamphen, Black Stork, White-headed Duck, Marbled Teal, Red-knobbed Coot and possibly Spanish Imperial Eagle - the list seems endless!
Finally we travel to Seville to catch the AVE high speed train back to Madrid for our flight home.
