Ethiopia

Mountains, apes and rock churches.
Overview

In which country in the world: was the last emperor descended from a love-child of the Queen of Sheba and King Solomon; is the arc of the covenant handed down by Moses, kept and seen by only one living person; are the world’s tallest stellae; where churches were hewed out of rock to create a new Jerusalem at the behest of a saint-king; can you see a thatched 17th century church saved from destruction by the Dervish by a swarm of bees; can you experience a coffee ceremony in the land where coffee originated; has Christianity been the dominant religion well before it became so in most of Europe and has eye-wateringly beautiful mountains?

The answer, of course is Ethiopia as these experiences are available nowhere else. This new tour follows the ’Historical Circuit’ which is just packed with cultural and scenic treasures in what must be among the most beautiful countries on Earth. We take in Bahir Dar on Lake Tana, Gonda and the Royal Enclosure, go high in the Simien National Park, explore Axum the pre-Christian capital, travel through the mountains of Tigrai and are amazed by the strange legend-encrusted town of Lalibella. We start and finish at Addis Ababa.

Tourism is still in its infancy here but one of the biggest bonuses of Ethiopia is the opportunity to meet Ethiopians, a considerate, stoic, strikingly handsome people who are waiting to welcome you.
