Eastern Cape

Elephants, wild country and sub-tropical beaches; a taste of the real South Africa.
Overview

The Eastern Cape is unique. Whilst South Africa now boasts many sophisticated cities, this is the land of amazing scenery and traditional African villages. Its unspoilt character makes it a sanctuary for mountain zebra, elephants, samango monkeys, meerkats and hundreds of different varieties of birds. From the mountains of the Great Karoo through rolling hills to the idyllic beaches of the Transkei’s Wild Coast, each day is both different and packed with highlights.

We start our journey in Addo National Elephant Park, home to the Big Five. We have game drives in open landrovers and, after dinner, stroll down to the waterhole to watch the animals having theirs! The park is just an hour from Port Elizabeth where we spend a morning amidst its charming colonial buildings. We also walk in the Zuurberg Mountains, famous for their vast open vistas.

Onwards to Graaff-Reinet in the Great Karoo, a pioneer town stuck in time, our base for visiting the Valley of Desolation, huge rocky pillars which dominate a landscape redolent of King Solomon’s Mines.

On the way to the Mountain Zebra National Park we call in at Nieu Bethesda, centre of a vibrant artists’ community, surrounded by some of the loveliest mountain scenery in Africa. We spend some of our time here looking for zebras and other mountain game.

The village of Hogsback in the verdant Amatola Mountains is our base for hiking across open hilltops, in forest dissected by deep ravines and beside countless waterfalls.

Our last stop, Mbotyi River Lodge, nestles between rolling hills, lush tropical forest and the warm Indian Ocean - a perfect setting for a relaxing end to this wonderful journey through the Eastern Cape.
