Cruise & Walk around the Canaries

Exploring mountains, volcanoes and gorges of the Canaries.
Overview

It is our cruises to the Canaries that really show best what Cruise & Walk is all about - a new island each day and real mountain walking at a time of year when the weather in northern Europe makes a cruise to the warm south seem even more appealing.

Each of the Canary Islands is quite different, but they have one thing in common - great walking. Tenerife, dominated by Mount Teide, has long attracted walkers to its mountain paths and gorges. La Palma’s Ruta de los Volcanes is a spectacular high-level walk trail taking in some of the 120 volcanoes on the island. Below these heights are forested slopes and there’s the added thrill if conditions are right of seeing the clouds falling like a waterfall over the nearby mountains. Lanzarote’s stark volcanic landscape doesn’t seem like the ideal location for amazing walking, but it most definitely is, as we take the route from Haria along the ridge to Teguise. More remote and less well-known, on La Gomera we have a dramatic ridge walk in the drier south of the country through remote and rugged scenery. Gran Canaria portrays itself as a miniature continent, so varied is the terrain. Fuerteventura has an exotic feel to it with its bizarre rock and sand landscapes dotted with green oases.

Agadir gives us a taste of exotic North Africa whilst two cruises drop anchor in the remote and beautiful Azores.

For our cruises which sail from the UK the journeys south and back home are broken by stops in Funchal, Lisbon or Oporto. New for 2013 Fred Olsen are for the first time running fly-cruises to the Canary Islands – we are sure these are going to be very popular! Whilst the opportunity for sea days relaxing on board will of course be less, keen walkers will have the highest concentration of different walks in different places that we have ever been able to offer.
