Croatian Island Adventure
Two Adriatic islands and a visit to Old Split.
OverviewOur island adventure takes place in Central Dalmatia region of Croatia on the beautiful Adriatic Sea visiting Brac and Hvar. Each island has its own distinctive character, each offering something new to discover.
We begin our journey on the Island of Brac and the fishing village of Postira, a short ferry and bus ride from Split. Brac is the third largest island in the Croatian archipelago and has the highest peak Vidova Gora (778m) of any on Croatia’s islands. Its economy has been built on quarrying, the fish of the Adriatic and whatever could be coaxed from the land. Brac’s quarries provided the stone for Diocletian’s Palace and the White House in Washington. Its fields provided olive oil and wine for Venice while its fish, goat and mutton fleshed out the diets of Venetians and locals alike. The island’s sheltered harbours were the doorways into the interior where the daily struggle for existence defined the Brac experience. The fingerprints of history are here in the maze of old goat trails and farm roads that cover the island. It is along these trails and roads that we’ll wander discovering sleepy villages, dramatic vistas of grey mountains set against blue seas and green fields overflowing with vines, olives, figs, kiwis, almonds and sour cherries.
We’ll spend our first three nights on Brac, at the 4 star Hotel Pastura, on the sea front overlooking the sleepy village harbour of Postira. From here we will travel back to Split en route to our second island Hvar. While in Split we will have an opportunity to explore the remnants of Diocletian’s Palace which forms the heart of this vibrant modern city. Another ferry ride brings us to the island and town of Hvar where we spend four very comfortable nights at the luxurious four star Hotel Amfora.
Nearly 45 miles in length, Hvar is Croatia’s longest island, noted for its mild winter climate and the number of sunshine hours it receives annually. Covered in lavender, rosemary and heather, the island is a delight to your senses. Its towns Hvar Stari Grad, Jelsa and Vrboska are individual gems set against the blue of the Adriatic. While life is hectic in the summer months, particularly in the town of Hvar itself, it slows down considerably in spring and autumn when we visit. There’s a standing invitation to wander along medieval alleyways, through Venetian squares and by loggias, to take a peek into cathedrals and Gothic palaces and to finally sit and sip a glass of prosek, the island’s dessert wine, while watching the life of the town and harbour unfold.
