Berlin - its Christmas Markets & more.

A festive atmosphere in a city for walkers.
Overview

Once the capital of Prussia and the leading cultural centre of the 1920s, nowadays Berlin is a new city which has reinvented itself as the dynamic new capital of the economic powerhouse that is Germany.

Characterised by both its modernity and impressive mix of cutting edge and traditional architecture there are few cities that have been shaped to such an extent by recent history and been through as much major transformation as Berlin. With the reunification, the old eastern part of the city has regained its place as the centre of the real Berlin with Unter den Linden once again as its heart.

December is a lovely time to visit the city. Anyone who wants to experience the charm of the Weinachszauber - a Winter magic - has to come to Berlin, the undisputed capital of the German Christmas Markets, Berlin offers you an astonishing sixty Christmas Markets to choose from.

Weihnachtszauber on Gendarmenmarkt, the city’s most beautiful square, is a classic Christmas Market that needs to be experienced and is the setting for the historical Berlin themed Christmas market, full of delicious treats, the smells of traditional Christmas and fairy lights.

Experience the magical Christmas market held in front of Charlottenburg Castle, themed to evoke the Biedermeier period. Historic carriage rides, themed exhibits in the palace itself, and specialised lighting return you to Christmas between the years of 1815 to 1848. Every weekend during Advent at the Weltbrunnen fountain trumpet ensembles, children’s choirs, jazz and Dixie players perform, while stalls everywhere will sell a variety of traditional (and less traditional) gifts, decorations and traditional local as well as festive foods and drinks. To enjoy the contemplative side of Christmas in Berlin, the Berliner Dom has services and other events throughout the period.

And we’ll take in the city’s highlights too in a series of sightseeing walks and excursions to discover the merging of Berlin’s history and cultural influences, its magnificent architecture and the delights enjoyed by Berliners themselves.

If you need to get into the Christmas spirit before hanging your stocking on the wall, there aren’t many better ways of doing it.
