Baltic Discovery

Historic cities and magnificent Baltic Coast scenery.
Overview

A cruise around the Baltic is perfect for an active sightseer to sample the splendours of Europe’s northern capitals of culture. The staggeringly beautiful city of St Petersburg is the jewel in the crown, but the gabled houses of Rostock, the cobbled streets of Tallinn and the islands of Stockholm are sights that will live long in the memory.

Wherever possible we take the opportunity to explore the local countryside beyond the historic cities. In Helsinki a local guide walks us through the city and the Töölönlahti Bay Park. From Warnemünde we visit the historic city of Rostock then walk along the Baltic Coast for coffee and cakes in a Gasthof redolent of old Europe. The Danish island of Bornholm has rocky coast and quaint villages and from Visby we hike on the Swedish island of Gotland, with its rolling green countryside and pretty villages. See Finland’s second city Turku with its old town, castle and riverside walking or visit Riga and Klaipeda, fine towns in the Baltic States.

In Copenhagen we walk from the ship passing the Little Mermaid and the painted canal-side houses of Nyhavn to the cathedral and city hall. The delightful city of Stockholm is a perfect place to spend a day, and two days there allows us to walk on the islands and peninsulas of the archipelago. And as for St Petersburg. it’s a city whose treasures leave many people speechless. The view from the Peter and Paul Fortress over the river to the Hermitage is one of the greatest in any city in the world.
