Avignon & Roman Provence
A week in this lovely region of France around Avignon and Provence
OverviewAvignon, in beautiful Provence, has been regarded as one of France’s major artistic centres since the 14th century when the Pope’s court was here. The Gothic Pope’s Palace remains.
To the south we visit Arles, the region’s key Roman city. We can explore too the city of Nimes with its remarkable Roman temple built around 5 AD, and the Jardin de la Fontaine, France’s first public garden created in 1750.
We ramble in attractive countryside with bright hues of wild herbs and flowers, presided over by Mont Ventoux, Provence’s highest peak. We’ll walk around St Remy-de-Provence, as well as visiting the town itself, and also visit the Pont du Gard, an amazing stone aqueduct 160ft above the River Gard.
