Arctic Birding Adventure

Discover the avian wonders of Finland, Lapland and Norway’s Varanger Peninsula.
Overview

Following the great success of our distinct Birdwatching & Walking holidays in Spain, Greece and Trinidad & Tobago over the past two years, our in-house bird expert has put together another special holiday, this time to Europe’s far north; Finland and Arctic Norway.

This is an incredible area which will provide encounters with completely different birdlife than most of the rest of Europe. In addition there will be other very interesting wildlife, habitats, landscapes, culture and the experience of the midnight sun. The timing of this holiday in the middle of the short northern spring will give the best possible chances to see many bird species which are extremely difficult to see not only in Europe but elsewhere in the world.

These include the spectacular ‘northern owls’, Arctic seaducks, vast seabird colonies, displaying summer-plumaged waders, some very scarce and localized Siberian species on the western limit of their range, along with many summer migrants that arrive to take advantage of the lengthening days and milder weather following the long winter of the Arctic wilderness. In this tour we will expect to see such northern specialities as Great Grey Owl, Hawk Owl, Capercaillie, Black Grouse, Hazel Grouse, Broad-billed Sandpiper, Red-flanked Bluetail, Siberian Jay, Siberian Tit, Rustic Bunting just to mention a few. In Varanger we can expect to see White-billed Diver, Brunnich’s Guillemot, Long-tailed Skua, Steller’s and King Eider and if lucky, Gyr Falcon.

An exclusive addition to this primarily birdwatching tour is a night in a wonderful wilderness centre, in deep forest next to the Russian border, designed to give close encounters with Brown Bears – the kings of the Finnish forest. Other impressive mammals of the area are Elk and Arctic Hare.
