Almeria Uncovered
Exploring Andalucia's undiscovered walking region.
OverviewThink you’ve ’done’ Andalucia? Think again! Tucked away at the eastern end of this vast Spanish province, that has already offered our groups so much wonderful walking, is Almeria. Less well-known than its more illustrious neighbour, the Costa del Sol, Almeria lies in the lee of the enormous Sierra Nevada range, which largely shelters it from the rain-bearing westerly winds in the region. Hence, with only 4 inches of rain a year, it is one of the driest, and sunniest, areas of Europe.
Technically a semi-desert, Almeria lies dormant during the heat of the Andalucian summer, but in winter and spring it bursts into life, and colour! This is particularly true along the coast where the richly-painted hues of sea and sierra are said to "dazzle the eye and lift the spirits".
The region has been largely protected from the over-development which has affected so much of the coastline of southern Spain and it remains, for now, a warm and tranquil haven for walkers keen to get "off the beaten track". Our walks will take us down to the coast, and amidst the impressive sierras that can be found in the region, including a day in the Cabo de Gata Natural Park, a wonderful wild coastline whose exceptional landscapes are often featured in films - think Indiana Jones!
Our hotel, the excellent Valle de Este Golf Resort, enjoys a tranquil location a few miles inland, and will provide us with a comfortable base, with plenty of facilities available (including a round of golf if this appeals) to enjoy in its relaxing environment.
