A Week Walking in Crete
Enjoy a week walking in Crete from Chania
OverviewCrete, Greece's largest and most southerly island, is a beautiful destination in any season. Mankind left its mark early and the scattered remains of Minoan palaces, Byzantine churches and Venetian fortifications tell of the passage of whole civilisations. Geology and the elements have left a spectacular landscape of rugged hills cut with valleys and gorges. Between the dramatic mountains and the sea lie green plains scattered with countless olive groves, vineyards and citrus trees. Along the coast, steep-sided coves and sandy beaches are washed by crystal clear waters.
Chania’s vibrant Old Town is built around a picturesque harbour with tall Venetian houses and quaint narrow streets, and is a lovely place to while away an evening. Our walks take us into the surrounding hills, through olive and citrus groves, and offer stunning scenery and breathtaking views. Chania has numerous attractions including the excellent naval museum, archaeological museum and covered market.
On 18 September 2012 we are based in the quiet town of Kastelli, set in a beautiful bay between the Gramvousa and Rodopou peninsulas. Kastelli is a lovely introduction to Crete. Barely touched by tourism, it offers a selection of tavernas serving traditional dishes and locally produced wines, a fine beach and a wonderful archaeological museum. Our walks can take us to the ancient harbour of Falassarna and to Polyrhinia, one of ancient Crete’s chief settlements.
