Hassness Country House is beautifully located in its own extensive grounds alongside the waters of Buttermere. Located just over a mile from Buttermere village on the eastern shore of the lake, Sheep graze the grounds and red squirrels scurrying around just outside the door. This is one of the remotest parts of the Lake District, has been recognised as offering some of Britain's best views and is a perfect starting point for some truly remarkable days in the hills.
There’s no pollution, just fresh invigorating Lakeland air. It rains occasionally, but rarely sideways. The only flight path we’re on is that of the local birdlife heading for the feeders in our garden.
Hassness at any time of year is an ideal base for explorations of the English Lake District with some great opportunities for wonderful walks amongst some of the country’s most magnificent landscapes. The seasons bring a changing character to the valley; Buttermere needs as many words to describe the shades of green as the Inuit need to describe snow. And towards the Autumn the hillsides burst into flaming shades of gold as the bracken changes it’s colour in preparation for winter when the higher peaks are dusted with the brilliant white of fresh snow. The natural skyline is one of the most impressive in Britain; at night you’ll rarely see the stars looking as bright in a sky free of air and light pollution. The madding crowds don't come anywhere nearby, and the hills around here are generally less well stomped than the more readily accessible peaks.
Accommodation is in two doubles, six twins and three singles - sleeping 19 people in total. Please note two of the twin rooms can also be made into doubles. All bedrooms have been recently refurbished and are very comfortable, and all have a hand basin. There are five high powered, recently refurbished modern shower rooms available just across the hall from each room.
A delicious cooked breakfast, picnic lunch, freshly baked cakes and a three course evening meal is provided every day by our resident chef (except Tuesday when there is a buffet breakfast and you can choose any one of the local pubs or restaurants to visit).
The English Lake District must be one of the most beautiful and dramatic walking areas in this country. A compact area of rugged mountainsides, high summits and open ridges, lakes and lakeside paths, it provides a great variety of wonderful walks for everyone, from the gentle ambler to high peak hiker.
We’ll visit some of the more famous mountains and others just as beautiful but less well known. Peaks with intriguing names can be reached from the house and can literally be the high points of the walking programme. We won’t run out of possible walks, magnificent views or panoramic skylines.
On some dates we organise leisurely walks at the easiest end of our holiday grade, on others some of the toughest in our programme. See below for the holiday departures with two leaders offering two grades of walk each day.
Every Thursday we have a presentation at the house from the Cockermouth Mountain Rescue about their work in the area.
Your hosts at Hassness Country house are Brian & Carole, ably assisted by Ruby. Brian creates fantastic meals to satisfy you after a day in the hills, whilst Ruby is famed for her cake-making! On guided walking holidays your tour leader will assure you of safe and enjoyable walking throughout your stay.
Hassness offers a home from home with hospitality and a relaxed atmosphere – it isn’t a hotel. And you'll love it!
