Brenda Leckie went on her cruising and walking holiday to the Land of the Midnight Sun and sent in her blog post for the site. Sounds like the stunning fjordland region lived up to its reputation as being oneof the most picturesque places in the world, and Brenda even got to see the elusive Midnight Sun!
What will I remember from the Land of the Midnight Sun? Walking across the Arctic Tundra on Magerøya, almost the furthest north of Norway, white reindeer skittering away from us, delicate flowers brightening the turf and later we saw North Cape itself towering above the ship’s deck.
The trip to the Briksdal Glacier near Olden, dramatic peaks, waterfalls, wild flowers and lunch near the glacier’s snout- though you can’t walk on it without a guided tour- and back to a hot shower and four-course meal on the ship. Yes, it does rain – but we got sun too and even a glimpse of it at midnight!
It’s fair to say some of the walks were more like city sightseeing tours, but sightseeing is better on foot than from the windows of a bus- the old part of Stavanger was surprisingly attractive – white-painted wooden houses surrounded by flowers. There were several days entirely at sea, some among magnificent fjordland scenery including a surprise trip when the captain took ‘Braemar’ along the Jøkelfjorden to view a glacier, the first cruise ship of its size to sail up the fjord. I’ll have to mention the Force 8-9 gale on the first day, even the captain said it was rough – but everyone survived!

I’d love to receive a copy of the photo Brenda has taken of me receiving those ladles of water down my back in the Order of the Bluenose ceremony when we crossed the Arctic Circle southwards. My wife tried to take some photos but at the crucial moment her view was blocked.
