Hi, I'm new to your blog, but I wanted to comment on what I have read about your journey around Portugal. I've never been to the Azores, but I have been to Portugal (Lisbon, in fact) and I think it is so great how certain aspects of culture are universally appreciated food, architecture, beautiful landscapes/scenery, and traveling in general.

Every new place that I visit, I always tour the city snapping as many photos as possible; I make it a priority to visit many different restaurants, and I always try to practice the language, even if I only have a pocket-size-dictionary-knowledge of the language Those things, for me, really make for a great traveling experience.

Traveling to places like the Azores really gives you such a grand world view, it teaches you about other cultures, as well as your own. Thanks for sharing your perspective on the beauty and gastronomical splendor of the Azores!

I agree with Linda's comments - it was a very enjoyable holiday although I found some of the walks very hard going due to the very demanding terrain - I sm not an experienced hill walker so I sometimes struggled to cope with steep slopes in slippery conditions - the weather did not help as we experienced severe gales and waterlogged paths - however- other members of the group were very supportive and helped me out a lot.The accomodation in the hotels was excellent although in Malta it was a bit remote as there were no facilities nearby . I used my initiative and used the excellent local bus service to visit some very interesting small towns and historic site solo in Gozo. It really helped that we were all seated together for meals so we got to meet everyone in the group. The supplement for a sea view - larger room - was a bit steep and maybe Ramblers could address that - especially as we were such a large group out of season.Overall - I think the trip was really well organised and good fun but- I do think travellers should be more aware of the difference between medium and moderate walks!!

To make a reply I have no idea what 'mail' means Or website so here goes. Laura's description of our New Year week with Ramblers World Wide is spot on with her descriptions of the time we had exploring the Sorrento Peninsular. I have posted a glowing report on the Hotel Mary on Trip Advisor. An enyoyable holiday with the variety of site seeing and walking with an efficient and lovely lovely leader in Annna who knew most of the population of the places we visited and in Vico Equense itself.

This holiday delivered everything it said on the tin and more. It was the perfect antidote to the dark, gloomy English winter with a week of continuous sunshine! The landscape was idyllic, the resort very comfortable and welcoming, and, as always, the company of the fellow Ramblers (with an excellent leader, to boot, Bob Rogers) all served to make the holiday thoroughly enjoyable and restorative.

Anyone on this walking holiday will recall how I lost my walking sandals coming down a very muddy track during to Barracoa stage of the holiday, and our local guide, Javi gave me use of his shoes and walked back barefooted.

Walking boots (at least decent ones) are impossible to get in Cuba and Javi's were second hand 6 years ago, and the soles were shear so although wearing them was better than nothing - there was not a lot in it and I was sliding around a great deal and usually landing on the poor chap, with Robin bringing up the rear and picking up anything that came separated from me in the process. .

I determined to how my gratitude by getting Javi a pair of decent boots sent overs somehow - he warned that the post was not safe. At first this appeared to be a challenge, but in the event the Ramblers' guide going our in January agreed to take them, so Javi did not have a very long wait.

He is delighted with them and I'm just so grateful to the Ramblers Rep - Julia - for taking them out.

Walking boots etc are taken for granted by us - it really made me consider how blessed we are being able to buy the right "tools" for the job! Even though I don't always check they are still fit for purpose before taking them away!
