Exploring the Malay Peninsula.  4645

A big city, deep jungle, high peaks and a land of contrast

Exploring the Malay Peninsula.
Malaysia delights visitors with its natural beauty and the friendliness of its people, which we hope to show you on this journey round the peninsula.

We fly to Kuala Lumpur and travel south to Melaka; a UNESCO heritage site. This historic colonial town is a living testimony to the multi-cultural heritage of traditional Asia and European colonial influences, evident from the European inspired architecture. These are some of the oldest buildings in the country. From here we will return to Kuala Lumpur to explore this wonderful city and a visit to the Batu Caves - a flight of 272 steps will lead us to a sacred Hindu temple cave where the shrine of Hindu deity, Lord Murugah lies.

We can explore part of the world's oldest jungle at Taman Negara. Our exploration will take place both by long boat and on foot. We will walk up Teresik hill, a jungle trail rich with flora once we reach the top we can enjoy panoramic views which on a clear day stretches as far as Mount Tahan - the highest in Malay Peninsula. This is also a great place to encounter the native wildlife, particularly lizards, snakes and the birdlife.

We get a taste for rural Malaysia at our next stop in Kuala Terengganu. We can witness the traditional life style of Terengganu villagers at a riverside village; industries like attap leave roof weaving and coconut sugar making are very much apparent, and if we are lucky we may catch a glimpse of the monkeys plucking coconuts.

Next we travel to Kota Bahru, stopping overnight and to experience the famous colourful wet market, and the tradition silver handicraft and songket weaving, before continuing through superb mountain scenery across to the west coast to Penang. The British, Chinese, Indian and Arab traders have all contributed to the culture of Penang. We can enjoy a City, Culture and Heritage guided tour of Georgetown - officially declared as a UNESCO site. From here we can visit the only Orang Utan research facility in Malay Peninsula.

Our tour wouldn't be complete without a visit to the glorious Cameron Highlands. A 4-wheel drive will take us to Mount Brinchang, the highest peak standing at 6,666ft tall; the views across the tea plantation are spectacular - this is the largest and best known tea station in the region. And finish the day off nicely with a refreshing cup of tea!

We return to Kuala Lumpur once more before our flight back to the UK.
