Captivating Cappadocia 2860 |
Discover a rocky lunar landscape in Cappadocia. | Cappadocia has a unique and distinctive landscape created by ancient volcanic eruptions. Erosion created a mystical land of uniquely formed tufa and basalt capped rock towers. Early Christian communities thrived and the towers were carved to create settlements, including beautifully crafted churches. Under threat by Arab armies, the communities fled underground, creating a network of subterranean cities, some of which we'll visit.
There are many different rock formations to marvel at: the valley of the fairy chimneys is a display of
untouched beauty. The well known Goreme Open Air Museum is home to fascinating settlements, churches and monasteries. Our guide will give us an intriguing insight into these ancient civilizations.
We'll visit the Ihlara Valley; once a favourite retreat of the Byzantine Monks and walk part of the beautiful Ihlara Gorge. We stroll past vineyards, poplars and pistachio trees.
We are based in Urgup, where many homes have been hewn out of rock. There are plenty of facilities in town including a traditional Turkish bath close to our hotel, the friendly family run Hotel Akzun. The owner Ahmet Akzun and his family are most welcoming and will make your stay here memorable.
All daily transport and services of a local guide are included.
