Best of the Great Algarviana Route  2616

Highlights of a new Portuguese traverse from Alcoutim to Cape St Vincent.

Best of the Great Algarviana Route
The Via Algarviana is a long distance footpath that runs from Alcoutim, close to the Spanish border, to Cape St Vincent, the most south westerly point in Europe. It has recently been inaugurated into the European network of walking routes as an extension of the GR13 and proudly places itself with the very best of the long distance walks in Europe. The entire route covers 187 miles and we have cherry picked the best parts and turned it into another great walking holiday for you.

Crossing the Algarve from east to west we will explore the forgotten interior and admire its dramatic beauty. From our base at Tavira, our walks will take us through wooded areas where carob and olive are cultivated. We will surround ourselves with the lemon, orange, pomegranate and almond trees and stand on top of hill sides where we can catch 360° views of the entire coast of the Algarve stretching for miles below us. We will visit the local villages where life has barely changed for centuries.

We discover the delights of Alcoutim, visit the traditional working village Cachopo and catch a splendid viewpoint from Alcaria do Cume. We will appreciate some of the local traditional products enjoyed by the locals and travel to Silves the most historic town on the GR13 with its Moorish Castle set on the banks of the river Arade.

We travel to the hillside above Monchique and walk down into the village whilst taking in some of the most spectacular views of the lush forests below. Our final destination will be Cape St. Vincent where we have lunch to celebrate the end of our epic journey across the Algarve where the sun continues to shine.

Highlights:
• We walk the best parts of one of Europe's grand routes (The GR13).
• Spectacular mix of walking and sightseeing across the Algarve.
• The dramatic scenery of the forgotten interior, including lemon, orange and almond trees, olive groves and quiet little villages.
Meals: Half board with breakfast taken at the hotel and dinners in local restaurants.
Accommodation: The four-star Porto Nova Hotel in Tavira.
Travel: By road throughout.
