Hidden Gems of Central Spain 1436 |
Exploring from Beteta and Albarracin | Castile and Aragon evoke the essence of Spain and our two centres, the small village of Beteta in Castile's Cuenca province and Albarracin in Aragon's Teruel province, are Spain's equivalent of 'La France Profonde'.
We have a surprisingly varied walking programme from Beteta in the Serranía (a mountain area encompassing towns and villages) of Cuenca, which takes us around a natural lake surrounded by osier beds and a man-made reservoir through woods to rugged limestone peaks. Leaving Beteta we visit Cuenca, famous for its hanging houses built on the rocks above the gorge created by the river Jucar.
Medieval Albarracin was declared a Spanish National Monument in 1961. Spectacularly located on a gorge-bordered peninsula in the Montes Universales it has to be experienced to be believed. The buildings have weathered and settled like the rocks in the surrounding mountains, the local merchants are without shop fronts, and the haphazard architecture is embellished only by the crafted ironwork of the window grilles and door pulls.
Our programme here includes a walk to the 'Rodeno', weathered pink rock with shelters containing some of Spain's most famous prehistoric rock paintings. There is the chance to visit Teruel with its four Mudejar towers (vividly described by George Orwell in 'Homage to Catalonia') in the Islamic style of the baptized Moors who built them.
