Walking from Antequera 1390 |
An undiscovered Andalucian Gem. | This new shorter holiday is based in the historic market town of Antequera, just an hour's drive from Malaga. Antequera, inhabited since pre-historic times, contains wonderful Roman remains, museums and even boasts a Moorish castle. This is a traditional Andalucian town with a friendly atmosphere and has the added benefit of being set in a beautiful fertile plain, surrounded by olive trees and the Natural Park of El Torcal, famous for its unusual shaped grey and white rocks and limestone fissures. A variety of birdlife can also be seen here, including eagles, vultures and kestrels. We can walk easily from here and a day trip into Malaga is also possible.
Our walks take us into the lower slopes of the Torcal Mountains amongst the olive groves and walnut orchards. Local transport will take us into the El Torcal Natural Park. Ten miles away lies the Lagoon of Fuente Piedra, famous for Spain's largest colony of flamingos, where footpaths lead to the surrounding villages.
We stay in the five-star Hotel Convento la Magdalena, a recently exquisitely converted 16th century convent set at the foot of the El Torcal Natural Park. Facilities here include a swimming pool, a wellness centre, an 18 hole golf course and tennis court. A great place to relax after a day's walk!
