Walking in Lanzarote 1276 |
Lanzarote, an island full of beauty and surprises |
Lanzarote's striking volcanic cones and beautiful sandy beaches are well known. Those in search of the pleasures that rambling can bring are well catered for too, on this, the most northerly of the Canary Islands. There are palm groves, vineyards, white-washed villages, and mountain vistas. The whole island is a UNESCO Biosphere reserve with over 40% of the island protected for its natural richness. There are plants endemic to the island, volcanic tubes, saltmarshes and wild beaches. Many say that Lanzarote is the most fascinating of the Canary Islands, and with winter temperatures which rarely fall below 20°C, it makes the perfect winter sun destination.
We stay in the island's capital, Arrecife, our hotel being virtually on the beach. Centrally located, Arrecife is a good base from which to explore the rest of the island. One walk will take us from the mountains above Teguise down through the Valley of a Thousand Palm Trees into Haria. The hike along the rocky coast from Ye to Famara is the most beautiful on the island, with views over La Graciosa and the other tiny islands off the north coast. Another walk leads to the Playa del Papagayo in the south.
If you had never thought of Lanzarote as a walking destination think again - it is an island full of beauty and surprises
