The Tarn & Aveyron Gorges 1135 |
Two gorges in two contrasting areas of deepest southern France, with walking in each. | Two gorges in two contrasting areas of deepest southern France, we spend ample time walking in each.
Our first six nights are spent in Millau at the southern end of the Gorge du Tarn. We walk amongst stunning limestone uplands and spectacular rock formations of the Grand Causses, including the celebrated Montpellier-le-Vieux, with great views of the deep, wooded gorges of the River Tarn. We visit the iconic viaduct designed by British architect Sir Norman Foster - the highest road bridge in the world!
Our time spent in picturesque Najac will be at a gentler pace, set in a superb position on a narrow ridge overlooking the Aveyron Gorge. We walk through the gorge and up into the bucolic upland scenery to visit some of the beautiful villages and bastides nearby, including medieval Villefranche-en-Rouergue. We visit the 12th century castle at Najac, considered to be a masterpiece of military architecture, which occupied a central role in the 13th century Albigensian heresy.
