Exploring the Republic of Macedonia

A land of lakes, mountains, canyons and history.
Overview

Hugely popular back in the days of Yugoslavia, FYROM (the Former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia as it is officially called), snappily named to distinguish it from the bit of Macedonia in Greece, remains a stunningly beautiful place. The views across Lake Ohrid remain unsurpassed, the Matka Canyon as impressive as ever. What we have now is an ever improving infrastructure which better can cater for the expectations of the 21st century.

We use the convenient flights to Tirana in Albania and transfer the short distance across the border to Ohrid to enjoy the beauty of the scenery on foot or during a dip in the lake from our lakeside hotel.

From Bitola we can enjoy walking in the Pelister Mountains and the history of  this impressive town, including a visit to the Roman town of Heraclea to view the mosaics. We will also visit Prilep and walk up to the monastery of St Michael that has frescoes dating from the 11th Century.

Moving north we stay close to Skopje and have a tour of the capital, the birthplace of Mother Theresa in 1910. We then visit the Matka Canyon for a boat trip and walk, before heading west to Struga before retuning to Tirana for our flight home.
